“If left untreated, shoulder pain can develop into rotator cuff tendinopathy or rotator cuff tears which could mean a significant lay off from training”

What is the rotator cuff and how does it relate to my shoulder pain?

The rotator cuff muscles can often become weak and experience fatigue during shoulder pain. The rotator cuff muscles provide stability and control to the shoulder joint, if this is missing you can experience symptoms such as shoulder impingement. Ongoing shoulder impingement could lead to shoulder bursitis, shoulder tendinopathies and rotator cuff tears. The rotator cuff muscles are made up of the following:

  • Supraspinatus
  • Infraspinatus
  • Teres minor
  • Subscapularis

Why does my shoulder feel tight now that I have pain?

Your shoulder is feeling tight as the muscles surrounding the joint are acting to protect the area. Due to your injury, the muscles around the shoulder joint will increase the amount of tension in them. This tension can often be resolved by Physiotherapy hands on treatment including massage, trigger point release and deep tissue massage.
